About

I was born and raised in the Philippines. Growing up, I have always wanted to figure out how things work. If they don’t, I would figure out how to make them work. When I found out I can also do this with the human body, off to medical school I went. However, more often than not, during medical training in the Philippines, due to limited available resources, ideal management of medical conditions remain in theoretical discussions only while more practical and economical methods are employed. This prompted me to come to the US for further medical training (residency) because I wanted to practice medicine the way it should be.

After a little over a decade of medical practice here in the US I have realized what I enjoyed the most in medicine - it is figuring out a complicated case, either a complicated diagnosis or a complicated situation. However, the US healthcare system does not really reward healthcare providers for figuring out a complicated case. It rewards healthcare providers per checkbox they tick. At first, I wanted to rally and change the system. US healthcare providers want the best for their patients. However, their leash is held by the US healthcare system. If they try to go too far, they choke without going anywhere. To their patients, they look like they haven’t done anything. Actually, they’re choking doing the best they can for their patients.

But first, let me cut my leash.
